Liver Surgeries

Liver Surgeries

Liver surgeries are performed to treat a variety of conditions affecting the liver, including tumors, cirrhosis, and infections. The types of liver surgeries include:

Hepatectomy involves the removal of part or all of the liver. A partial hepatectomy removes a segment of the liver and is often used to treat liver tumors or metastatic cancer. A total hepatectomy involves removing the entire liver, typically followed by a liver transplant, as the liver is essential for life.

Liver Biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of liver tissue is removed for examination under a microscope. This is often done to diagnose liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis and to assess the extent of liver damage.

Liver Transplant is a procedure where a diseased liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a donor. This surgery is usually performed for patients with end-stage liver disease or acute liver failure.

Laparoscopic Liver Resection is a minimally invasive technique where small incisions are made in the abdomen to remove a portion of the liver using specialized instruments and a camera. This approach typically results in less pain and a faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

Cryoablation and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) are techniques used to destroy liver tumors using extreme cold or heat, respectively. These methods are often used for patients who are not candidates for surgery or have small, localized tumors.

Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) is a procedure where chemotherapy is delivered directly to the liver tumor via a catheter, combined with embolic agents that block the blood supply to the tumor, effectively killing cancer cells.

Portal Vein Embolization is a procedure used to shrink a part of the liver before a major resection, allowing the remaining liver to grow and improve its function.

These liver surgeries aim to treat or manage liver diseases, remove tumors, or improve liver function. Recovery times and outcomes vary based on the type of surgery, the patient’s overall health, and the underlying liver condition.
